I just bought a FiiO DAC-E17 and hooked it up to my PC via a USB cable to one of the USB ports in the back. Is this the optimal way to hook up the E17 to the PC for the best sound?

Are there any adjustments I need to make in Windows? The E17 does show up as a SPDIF Interface under the "Sound" panel. I have my headphone hooked up to it and there is sound when playing games and watching Youtube but when I go play music using Windows Media Player there is an error. How do I fix this?
 
the main thing you need to do is make sure you have the bit rates set how you want.

my FiiO E07K has a nasty habit of defaulting to 16bit when first connected.
 
if it is a 24 bit dac, set it to 24. if it is 16 bit, set it to 16. Also make sure it is your default device.

for sampling frequency, I use 48khz for myself, but it depends on the content you listen to and how your dac performs at that frequency. CD quality music is 44.1khz, youtube videos as well. Videos in general are 48khz. The setting only effects directsound output. Most music players have options for wasapi exclusive mode and ASIO, where the setting is irrelevant. So you don't have to feel pressured to use 44.1 for your music.
 
Interested in this, but, if you sometimes want to use speakers with it, what are the options and where do you connect them?

For both computer speakers and bookshelf speakers - ?

To just get going, I'd use headphones and computer speakers but not sure where computer speakers would plug in. They have their own power and amp but I still am unsure of where they plug in with these DACs. Sorry for the ignorance. :-/
 
Also, what settings should I use when playing games? If I chose the highest settings will it just default to lowest ones that the game was recorded with?
 
i'd just check the various supported formats (supported formats tab) and set the default mode to whatever makes the most sense for your listening material.

if you get the dock (E09K) then you have rca line and pre outs so you can use it with equipment with it's own preamp or even a power amplifer.

if you don't want to buy the dock (for desktop use the dock is pretty handy) they also sell a line out adapter (has 3.5mm line out port) that is listed for being for the E7 but works with the E17 or E07K also.
