Hi.

In few days I'm getting a 9800Pro, and I was wondering which drivers are the best for that gpu? Should I install newest ones (pls tell me which are those, cos I have nVidia atm and I'm behind ATi's stuff and all) or are the newest made only for x800 series?
Also, how hot is this GPU when in 3D applications? Since it's in 0.15u technology, I think it can be quite hot?
I want to set up some heatsinkers on the ram, but don't know which ones should I buy.. any suggestions?
And what scores should I get with that card? AQ3, 3DMark01/03/05 ? (Yea I know, it's hard to tell, but what scores would be normal to get..)

What is the rest of your setup?

I had a 9800pro in my computer not too long ago. (the card is now in my home theater box)

Also, how much ram does your card have? Is it a 128bit or 256bit memory interface and what core do you have (r350 or r360)?

I'm out of the country right now, but I have numbers for that card in a spreadsheet from my old 9800pro days.

I'll post back here when I'm in the states again and let you know what's normal for my old 9800pro setup.

You should also check out mentok's sticky 3dmark05 thread. The only problem with that is that you don't always know what 9800pro that person had or what processor they had.
 
My system is:

AXP2500+ @ 3200+ (2,2GHz)
1GB Kingston PC3200
Gigabyte Ga-7N400L
Antec Power 350W

That PSU was running above posted rig + 6800GT with no problem, so I guess it won't be any problem with 9800Pro eh?

The card is Powercolor 9800Pro 256bit 128MB, core R350.


Also, what drivers to use?
 
the drivers are the same for the Radeon series of cards.
 
Ok, as I checked the newest are 5.2? Pls help, I don't want to have a driver problem on the end..
 
Yeah the 5.2s are the newest, but I have had sucess using the 4.12's. Just about any newer version will do you good.
 
IMO from the 4.12s up its all good the diffrence in frames varys from game to game and is normaly like 3 Frames max.

Now for the last unanswered question.. how hot does the 9800Pro get in 3D aplications? It's 0.15u technologie.. I don't want to run it on 100C :eek:
 
My R350 core didn't have a temp sensor.

It was also a horrible overclocker. Even on watercooling :confused:

Supposedly the R350 is a good OC'er

Now that mine is in my HTPC, I don't want it voltmodded. That computer needs to run 24/7 problem free

Make sure you do a reformat or at least run drivercleaner before changing cards..
 
DriverCleaner will do the job, I hate format. And even when I changed from ATi to nVidia I didn't use not even DC. Thing worked like it was formated :)

Simple is teh best :D
 
Use the latest drivers.
Yes the GPU gets very hot. I was shocked when I felt the heatsink compared to my old gf4, which barely got warm, compared to this card which will burn you.
I get around 13500 in '01, around 6300 in '03 and around 2500 in '05.

I will get a h2o cooling soon anyway. I hope then will the card be a bit cooler.

You only get 13,5k in 01? What CPU do u got? Cos as I saw with 9800/5900 FX ppl get around 20k.. but okey, with decent CPU, like 3000+/3GHz p4?

13500 was what I remember getting although I only ran it like once after I first got the card. It is on the low side cause my gf4 overclocked could get into the 12000 range with the same system. I don't think 20K is common on this card though without lots of tweaking, and I'm not a big believer in tweaking for a 3d benchmark. Right after my last post I ran '05 again and got a 2700. Do you play a lot of old games ? Otherwise I don't think '01 is very relevant.

Ok because I'm really bored I'm d/l '01 again and we'll see what it scores.

Ok I got a 15770.

Doesn't seem like it could improve that much with no other changes, so maybe my memory is off. I guess it could hit 20k with a better cpu.
 
What I play is Jedi Knight 2, Lineage 2 and CS:S. I think there won't be any bigger problems running these games on 1024x768/1280x1024... (I don't use AA/AF)..
 
With the R350 core you won't be able to overclock beyond 400-410 MHz with stock cooling so don't expect too much. The memory clock (2.8 ns) is also close to the limit, typically you'll get 360 MHz stable with ramsinks and 350 without. OC or not, your card will get hot as hell but it can take the heat.
 
Well, I had a 9800SE 256bit like 1 year ago, went from 380/680 to 440/750 with stock (no ram coolers) Also 2.8ns, 350core..

But anyway, when I have water cooling, I'll do a vmod if the sucker won't OC as I wish.

Oh yea 1 thing.. 2.8ns means it can go to 700? Or 800?
 
2.8 ns is the inverse of the theoretical max clock frequency, which is 357 MHz.

I think most people agree that 9800Pro is not a great overclocker, but good luck with the watercooling :)
 
These x.xns ram max clock is a balderdash anyway. You can always clock behind that "limit"..

I have Asus 6800'GT' atm, it has DDR1 ram, 2.8ns! Stock clock is 700, i've been running it @ 922MHz with stock cooling no vmod.
And nah lol don't ask why I'm going from this gpu to 9800Pro..
 
If the stock mem clocks are 700 MHz it's probably not 2.8 ns memory... the ns figure is based on the max frequency for operation above a certain bit-for-bit confidence level (e.g. 99.99 %), if you accept a higher frequency of artifacts (as overclockers often do) you can of course impress higher clock frequencies.
 
yeah i agree with the 9800 pro only getting 13k is off. With my 9700 I rec'd around 15k.

But....if you see no issues in gaming I wouldnt play with it anyway.
 
Hm, I'm almost 100% Asus 6800'GT' has 2.8ns.. atleast that's how I remember when I checked ram's on it. I'll do it soon again anyway..

I dont know if it really scored that low or if I just don't remember correctly. I ran '01 again after slasher said it was low and got a 15700, so I was probably wrong about scoring a 13k.
 
Bump

Today I got the Powercolor 9800Pro 128MB. I made a complete format, and got 57xx marks in 3DMark03. I think that's quite good for non OC card this rang eh?

But, one thing bugs me. I installed RivaTuner to clock it, and then it says "no supported drivers found".

I got 4.9 Cataclyst drivers and RT v2.0 Release Candidate 15.2 .. is there something wrong with the version?
