FDD issues with Win2k

Bought a new floppy drive the other day for my AMDMachine (K8N Neo Platinum), and the computer recognizes it fine, it shows up and everything, but whenever I go to open it asks me to insert a floppy into drive A:

Now, this is what I've done so far.

Used the same FDD and cable in another machine - works fine.
Used the same FDD drive and a different cable in the AMD Machine - doesn't work
Used teh same FDD drive and a different cable in another machine - works fine

(by the way, this is all using the same 2 floppy disks, which I know for a fact work in my parents Win2K box)

I've also made sure that the red line lines up with pin 1. Again, there are no problems at all with the floppy drive except that it never realizes when I put a disk in it. Only on this one AMD Machine though... any hints?

Did you configure the floppy port in the BIOS (3.5" 1.44mb)?



in any case, your port could be toast...

Yes, I configured it in the BIOS. It should be all set... and like I said it works in other machines.

What do you mean by fried port?

where are you when you click on it.. If your in My computer it shouldn't ask but lets say you right click on start and then hit explore , well then if you click on the a drive it'll ask you every time

This just became a major pain in the ass too, because I want to run PowerMax, and I need a floppy...

What do you mean by fried port?

That the port on the motherboard is:
Busted, croaked, dead, el morte, fubar'ed, done broked, no worky, malfunctioning, damaged, defective, mangled, mutilated, kaput, gone haywire, wracked, inoperable

etc.

strangly Im dealing with nearly the same issue
known good FDD & cable
yet I get error in the event log and interupt storms
it does intermittenty work however

but I certainly wouldnt blame the CPU
rather I assume that if its actually a hardware\busmaster driver issue that its related to the chipset

The floppy drive talks over a very old interface and floppy drives are very dumb.... individual circuits do things like move the heads one track or spin up the motor. One line... #34 signals when a disk has been inserted. There is a chance that the trace running to that line, or the functionaity in the IO chip is damaged.

It IS worth trying different floppy drives... there is going to be differences in the tolerances of signal levels with different makes of drives, so there's a chance another drive might work better with your particular MB. (Be sure to try other makes & models)

The FDD Interface Dates back to the IBM XTs

Another option to the USB floppy would be an internal LS120 Drive which runs off the ATA / IDE interface.

As far as the inital problem, I've never seen it.

Not blaming the CPU, just trying to differentiate between my machines. If I was gonna blame anybody I'd blame nVidia... Damn, this is a pain. Everything works except for a floppy drive... *sigh*
