So for fathers day I want to build a new computer for my dad using a mATX board installed into a model Nascar. He is a big fan of Terry LaBontte. Anyway, does anyone know the sizes for scale Nascar models such as 1:16, 1:32 and so on. I want to make sure there is enough room in there for the components to fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're going to need to find a model that's 1:10 to 1:8 scale for a mATX board bro, even with low-profile cards. Ever looked into ITX or other tiny integrated formfactors?

1:10 scale is usually ~14" to 16" long (if memory serves me correctly), and be expecting 1:8 to be 18" to 20" long. Believe me, you're going to have one HELL of a time fitting anything other than an HSF unit (and a small one at that) into a 1:16 scale model.
 
Yeah it'll be one [H] challange but I think I can handel it. 1:8 sounds like a good place to start. I was not sure of the lengths and widths of the scales. I have never used an ITX before but I will look into it. Also I have seen extenders for PCI slots that are flexable so you can mount it somewhere else. Do they have these for AGP of PCI express. I have only done one case mod before so this will be a learning experience.

You might want to consider looking at RC car bodys at a local hobby store to find something in that scale. I'm sure you would be able to find a decal set for the desired car you had in mind.
 
I will check Riders hobby and see if they have any. Does anyone know of a small form factor motherboard (ITX, fATX) that goes up to a 2.4ghz processor. The ones that I have looked at do not look like they go above 800mhz. My dad is a gamer as well and I need to give him some power to play with.
 
You could get ahold of a Shuttle SFF barebones system, and use the mobo and power supply from that, maybe even the ICE cpu cooler, if there's enough room in the car. You should be able to find one for under $200 easily, tho I don't know what your budget is for this project.
Shoot, doing a quick search over at Anandtech's hot deals forum shows that Newegg has this Biostar iDEQ Barebone System for Socket A AMD CPU, Model IDEQ 210V for $152 + $5 shipping. Nice setup, handles thru any Athlon XP cpu ever made, along with pc3200 ram if you wanted to use that. Lots of onboard goodies too, along with a pci and 8x agp slot. :)

If you'd rather have a Pentium rig inside the car, check out the Shuttle ST62K rig. For the month of February, it has a $100 mail in rebate via Shuttle. Currently not in stock at Newegg (but it's the lowest priced great retailer, at $229 + $3 shipping), but available at Mwave for $245 + shipping ($20 for me, here in Texas.....ouch!! :eek: ) + tax, if you're in California (same as Newegg, natch!!).
The rebate is directly through Shuttle, and they're really good about rebates. :)

Now, here's a little secret I'm gonna tell you, that you can do with what you want to......

Shuttle is soooooo good about their rebates, that I've even gotten one from them for a refurb'd SN41G2 SFF system I bought a couple years ago from Newegg. That system normally went for ~$240 at the time, and I got one for $200 shipped, then got the $60 rebate from Shuttle, no questions asked. Sooooooo......if you can find one refurb'd at Newegg, and can get it for a good price, AND want to take a chance, you might get a hellluva great deal!! :D
 
Thanks alot! I was looking at a flex ATX soultion and just for the mother board, ram and processor it was at 600+ from New Egg. But now I will look at the shuttles as a place to start. I still have to find the car(s) to work with but I will cruise ebay later on today. Also thanks for the info about the rebates.

Edit: DOH! I just went to new egg and that one was out of stock. I will keep looking though.

Yeah I thought I would give my self some time. Between work and the GF I am very busy. I plan on posting a work log when I start the project.

Here's another question for you guys. I am looking for a slim CD burner. I have found some but they use that connector that Dell uses on the back of the drive and then a normal IDE end that goes to the mother board. Any one know where to get a cable like that?
 
Hey, just noticed that Newegg has that Shuttle SFF barebone back in stock. Unfortunately, it's $20 more than it was before!! :mad:

Ewiz has it for the same shipped price, if that helps at all. I've used them before, with no problems. :)

No idea about that half-height drive cable, sorry. Keep us up to date on this project. :cool:
 
So I have been looking around for a car big enough to put this in. I have looked on ebay, at local memorabilia shops, and on google. I was almost gonna scrap the idea until I was out of town the other week. I was at a bar and they had a 1/6 RC Nascar that would work. Now all I need help with is finding one around the MI area. Any suggestions?
