FAT32 vs. NTFS

i was going to install a second copy of winXP on my second hdd (you know, to play around with and tweak without the fear of f**king stuff up - also, could use it as a gaming OS, no services/antivirus/firewall/background progs)

anyway, it asked if i wanted to 1)reformat with NTFS (hell no, i have data on that), 2)quick format (again, no) 3) convert the FAT32 partition to NTFS, or 4) no changes

anyway, i was wondering, what is the big diff between NTFS and FAT32, performance wise? and, does converting it to NTFS erase all the data thats on there?

You should not convert to NTFS, it can cause performance issues. However you SHOULD format to NTFS because true NTFS (not converted) runs much faster than FAT32 when you have large amounts of data on a hard drive. Check the FAQ on this forum for details on why and how Fat32 and NTFS work.

aww crap, that sucks, i was hopping it was a SMALL diff.....

cause you see, that IS my backup drive (only got 2 drives, 1x 40gb, 1x 120gb....and the 40gb is just used for windows - that is the NTFS one, which i reformat/reinstall quite easily if there is a prob, the 120gb has all my games and progs - and can't be easily reformatted, it runs on FAT32)
 
I think it'd be worth it to backup to a friend's drive and format to ntfs when you do your next system up-keep/LAN party... for large amounts of files you will see a big amount of impact because the size of the actual chunks are doubled from 32 to 64 on the physical platters letting the hard drive pick up much more data much quicker.

alright, thanks, i'll prob just "borrow" my moms 40gig tho, that along with the extra 30gig i got on my drive should cover it

FAT32 has a slight performance advantage if small partitions are employed, because of the reduced filesystem overhead
however you trade security, data integrity and recoverability, of course if a larger partition is employed, NTFS holds the advantage across the board
