Hello, does anyone have a fanless PSU here? such as the Antec Phantom 350 or Silverstone ST30NF - and could post your experience with heat and reliability?
If you're looking for reliability, I wouldn't look at the fanless units. As for heat, that's a given. Being passive means more heat, obviously. Why not consider some of the quieter fan-cooled models? Seasonic is about as quiet as it gets.
I had an Antec Phantom 350W. I used it for a week and had to return it for the Neopower 480W. I run an overclocked P4 3.2 (prescott) to 3.95Ghz with 6800gt. The powersupply seemed like it was struggling to give reliable power (looking at the rails). Also, it gets really hot inside the case which made the case temperature drastically rises. Once I replaced the PS with the Neopower, which in itself is only one silent fan PS, the case temperature decreased by at least 5C. Given the amperage on the rails, the wattage, and the heat issue, I would not recommend this powersupply with a power system.
After I reviewed the ePower Lion I stuck it in my wife's machine in our bedroom. Makes a big difference (especially since she has a Zalman flower... the only fan she has running is the one I put in the CPU blow hole in the side panel.)
It does get hot, but not too hot.
The ePower Lion has the nice feature of not being truly fanless. It has a fan that will kick in when the temps get too hot.
I think all PSU's should have a fan. Even if they hardly ever turn on.
