Fan Grills Causing Noise?

I'm using an Antec 200 that I purchased in a combo for a budget build:

I installed an extra fan in the front (front intake, back and top out) and the whole fan setup seems to be running really loud. There is a plastic "grill" and then a mesh filter in front of the fan on the front of the case. The fan is seated directly behind the plastic, so it is pulling air with plastic right in front of it. Could this be causing noise? Would it result in better airflow and noise reduction if I were to remove the plastic in front of the fan?

Solid metal meshes will cause air turbulence noise. I noticed on my old Raidmax Smilodon that the front mesh in front of the 120mm fan in addition to Demciflex filters made a terrible air turbulence noise. Can you try running your computer with the front bezel off to see if the mesh is causing the noise?

I'm sure this won't apply to all cases, but when I used to build computers as a side job if a customer complained about excessive noise from a fan I would put a gutted fan inbetween the live fan and the intake.

In other words, I would gut out everything from an old burnt out fan so nothing was left but the square mounting area with 4 screw holes. This decreased the noise from intake fans dramatically especially at higher RPM's. Try it, it DOES work wonders! Good luck!

You basically made a fan shroud. It does work and decreases dead zones as well. With my san ace fans a regular 25mm thick shroud lets me increase the rpm by 300 without increasing the noise.
