Facebook says it will begin targeted advertising on its site based on what its users and their friends buy and do on the internet. I’m not sure Facebook users are going to like this one, what do you think? Good idea? Bad Idea?

The initiative, which comes as Web sites look to boost advertising revenue by charging more for ads targeted to a user's hobbies, interests and behavior, could change the tone of the site and renew privacy complaints.

A step in the wrong direction IMO.

Perhaps if they were based on location (country)?

I hate adds and to be honest it does not make me buy anything anyways. Too bad im in a select few and also dont use facebook anyways...

noscript + ad block + selective cookie choices = what ads / tracking on facebook?

I don't see how usage stats are an invasion of privacy. If they were going to really invade your privacy, they wouldn't tell you they were doing it.

Ads suck, we all hate ads, but they seem to pay for everything. Who is more evil, the lawyer or the ad buyer?

Yes ads pay for everything, even our beloved HardOCP has ads. And they are good for a few things...

Look at Kyle's post in the forum (about half way down) for a more in depth look at ad benefits:

Even if I'm not buying, I usually come here to click on a newegg link before I browse. Someones got to pay the light bill. I have resisted myspace and facebook for a long time, but I may start looking into facebook since traffic to my personal site is about nil :)

Firefox users can also install the Stylish add-on. There are Facebook styles that try to block ads and apps. Pretty nice.
