Eyefinity trumps Microsoft?

Why was it that ATI and Nvidia said they couldn't support span mode from xp in vista and win7 because of some architectural change Microsoft made with the windows display driver?

This obviously isn't the case since eyefinity is doing it. How hard would it be to enable this on the GT200 and HD4800 cards? I'd really like to run dual screen gaming until the time when I can get a 3rd monitor and a 5870 (with 3xDVI support).

Someone with the technical know-how tell me why it's doable now and it wasn't then.

Umm it was do-able then with Matrox.

It requires a hardware solution, not a software solution.

Maxtrox has demonstrated this for a while now. Windows still thinks it's a single monitor.

This is hardware not software smart guy.

All I heard about it was that it was a driver issue, which is obviously software. So the new hardware circumvents whatever that restriction was I suppose. No need to get snippy, I just wondered why they claimed it couldn't be done because of MS, when obviously it could and they were just waiting for the next generation of hardware to make sales.

Do you still get to use all three monitor in XP for normal desktop use, or do you just get 2 monitors in XP?

Read some of the discussion about it. It is possible on 58XX because the architecture has changed and that card now has 6 display engines on the core (at the request of laptop manufacturers, 2 for dual screen laptops, 2 for external ports on the laptop, and 2 for potential docking stations). The old hardware doesn't have that, nobody was lying to you.
