Extremely Slow Shut down

Um....
Yeah my pc is taking like 10 to 15 minutes to shut down.
I just installed XP pro like 3 months ago.
And i dont use any spyware programs.
So... I am really confused...
Its the system in my sig thats doing this too!!!

look at the system and aplication logs in event viewer. maybe something is not responding.

the same thing was happening to me, so i made a shortcut on my quicklaunch with the target "%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0" (without quotes) and it bypasses all programs and quickly shuts down the computer

i'm guessing, since you did a fresh install, you have a lot of services running; therefore, when you go to shutdown, it takes time to close all of those services.

look at the Unofficial Official Tweak Guide thread stickied at the top, and there are a few XP Tweak guides mentioned.

read all of them, do all of them (that you feel comfotable doing).

that should solve your problem.

I recently did a reinstall of Windows. After the install, I forgot to turn my modem off before I installed the updates, SP1, and my firewall. After doing all of the updates, etc, I was getting slow shut down time. I reinstalled, and this time proplery disabled my modem first. I installed the firewall, SP1, and some security fixes. MY slow shut down problem didn't come back.

the first linky is a wonderful 404.

the second linky is bitching at me for "hotlinking" -- linking to non-HTML or image files with a "Free Account."

frightfully wonderful help.

Who pissed in your Wheaties this morning?

^LOL

If could be that either drivers or programs are hanging in the RAM causing problems wihen trying to shut down. Go through taskbar and see what programs are running. I would also disable any unwanted services that XP is running. Go here and read through the services and disable what you can.

GL:D

Sorry, the first trick is a registry tweak, load regedit and go to: HKCU/Control Panel/Desktop/AutoEndTasks and change its value to 1.

The second is a program called Prefetch Clean and Control, link from majorgeeks.com to download the program there, it works great :D

if ur using a logitech keyboard then thats your culprit
upgrade to latest itouch software off logitech's site and itll solve your problem.
previous version would take a long time to shutdown the pc.

if you dont have a logitech keyboard on the other hand, completely disregard this post ;)

You by any chance use a Logitech keyboard and mouse? I know I had a HUGE problem with the exact same thing with my computer taking forever to shut down and it ended up being a problem with logitech's drivers so they released a fix for it....Just going out on a limb here. Good Luck

yep, definitly check into that. On my machine it was the older version of itouch that came with my keyboard that was screwey. Luckily I went to their site and they have updates for both mouseware and itouch ready for download. The updates fix all of the errors I have come across in the programs.
