External On/Off toggle switch

I know this isn't strictly case modding, but anyone have any ideas on how to make an external (think mounted somewhere in a desk) hard on/off toggle switch for a UPS/Power strip? Being summer, it would be nice to flick a single switch and have everything on hard off. The UPS still runs (I can hear the fan) when I hit the soft switch, so that is not an acceptable option. Thanks.
 
uhhh... a ups is designed to run when the power goes out, so cutting the power to the ups isn't going to do anything but run down your battery. You need to use the ups's power switch to turn it off.

Thanks for the response, but I was looking for a way to turn off the power to the UPS after I hit the soft off switch. For instance, I could hook it to a power strip, hit the soft off button on the UPS, then hit the main power strip toggle. However I am looking for a way to transfer the equivelant of the power strip toggle to a toggle switch implanted in my desk. Hope this clarification helps.
 
Oh okay. Sounds like a lot of work just so you don't have to hear a fan. Anyway, there are a couple ways to go about this. You could just splice a switch directly to the power line going to the UPS, and put a few feet of wire on the switch so that you can place it wherever you want. In this case you need to make damn sure you have everything very well insulated and protected since you will have 120VAC at potentially several amps going through that wire. Another option is to place a relay inline in the power going to the ups, and have a low-voltage dc circuit to activate the relay. In this case the switch will be low-voltage dc so there will be much less risk involved.

If you want to avoid splicing cables then you could just tear out the switch in your power strip and get a few feet of wire and wire it up. Just make sure you get sufficiently large wire to carry the current.

Hmmm...I guess I don't want to play with 120VAC and several amps. Your idea of tearing up a power strip seems a good one. I will definately consider that option. Thanks!
