external NAS question

when try to access my external nas drive on my mac i can access files like on teh fly but when i try to access using windows xp it seems to Download teh complete files and ususally just locks up VLC player. but on the mac i can access teh nas and just drag the file onto vlc and it plays. is there a program i can use on windows that will work how the mac does.

EDIT:

also on the mac when i download it allows me to save target directly to the NAS disc. but on windows it wont allow me to directly save to the NAS. on windows i have to save to hard disc and then transfer.
