Just got an external HD, a Maxtor 40GB 3000LS, to use to get some stuff off my desktop to take to school with me (I have a laptop, but dont want to put to much on it). Well, every time I try to transfer files to it, my computer locks up. I have checked the Maxtor site, but to no avail. (The only drivers they have are for Win98SE, and can only reply to emails in 2 days...I leave tomorrow.) (Oh, I am using WinXP Pro, but are still on SP1.)

I think its the USB card I am using. I tried the ports on my MB, they worked but were slow, since they arn't highspeed ports, and Explorer would crash every now and then. But when I use the USB card, with the highspeed ports, it would work for a bit, and then my comp would completely lock up. Any thoughts?
