Hi, i am in the market for an external hard drive that is extremely reliable and pretty fast. At least 7200rpm with USB 2.0.

I need it to be reliable as in like it will last for a good while. I am just really afraid that after some extensive use, the drive would one day fail and i will lose 80gb of files. Oh man, i will kill myself. :eek:

Also, is there a way we can find out, how our external hard drives are doing. Perhaps some utility that can tell us that "hey, this drive is going bad. Its time to replace it" type deal.
 
If your data is really that important I would definatly reccomend and external enclosure with two drives. You can use the windows dynamic disk feature to mirror them.

I have had best results with putting seagate drive in external enclosures bought seperatly. I find that western digital drives are anying with the wine they emit (specificly their 250GB model).

I have learned the lesson the hard way that it is MUCH cheaper to double up on the hardware than it is to get your data recovered, both in time and expense.

I currently have several backup scripts that run automaticly on my computer to back data up to a mirrored array.

Am I paranoind, yes. But am I paranoid enough? ;)
 
I'm looking for something too, one that is reliable and fast, but mostly reliable.

At least 120gig, 200gig at max. I'd gladly pay more for a 120gig if there's proven reliability than a larger drive at the same price if there isn't anything known about it.

Only if my company was smart enough to not fall for those damn mini PC computers with no room inside this could have been avoided.
 
I'd definatly stick with seagate for the external enclosures. I dunno if theres any scientific reason, but my two external seagates that ive used (still am using)....are both working. However, both Maxtor and WD drives for some reason have BOTH crapped out on me. Therefore, i will never buy them again. Not to mention, the seagates have a 5 year warrenty. Unlinke maxtor...sons of bitches....
 
I was looking at WD external drives. Why are they only one year warranty, aren't they just the same drives as their internal ones but in their own external cases, so why not have the usual warranty on them too? Doesn't give me much faith in their product.

I'll look into those seagate ones.
