Got a vantec nexstar today, but I can't get it to work. I attach everything, plug it in, the hard drive spins up, and the icon like it's going to detect a new drive pops up, but the drive never gets detected. I go to device manager and see 2 USB mass storage devices, 1 for my thumb drive and one for this. The one for this drive has an exclamation point "this device cannot start"

Before I do anything, I try a second hard drive. Same thing happens. Thinking that BOTH of the drives might be dead, I restart the computer just to see what happens, and it freezes on boot. So now I disassemble the enclosure, plug the hard drive in to an IDE port (no enclosure), and both drives function properly. I give both of them a fresh fat32 format and verify that their jumpers are set to master.

Next I reconnect the drive after giving it a fresh format to the enclosure, and it still doesn't work. So now I remove the thumb drive, uninstall all usb mass storage stuff on my computer, and flip on the enclosure again. This time only 1 usb mass storage pops up (as it should, the thumb drive is no longer plugged in), but it still has the exclamation point, "this device cannot start"

I know usb mass storage works (the thumb drive), and I know the drive works (I formated it and looked at it afterwards via IDE). I don't see how the vantec enclosure could be broken really, so what am I doing wrong?
 
yes it is set to master, as I noted above.

I've been screwing with it some more, and now I can get it to come up as USB 2.0 storage device under disk drives, but it still doesn't show up under my computer or computer management as a drive, and if I reboot and the drive is on, my computer doesn't post (reads the first line of bios information, what version the bios is etc, and then freezes before probing memory/cpu). It does this under any circumstance, driver installed correctly or not, as long as the unit is powered on when I turn on the computer, my computer won't complete post.
 
Tried it on another computer, plugged it in, it plugged and played fine, usb 2.0 storage device came up. But the drive didn't appear anywhere. It wasn't in my computer, it wasn't in disk management, nowhere...
 
bump for an old thread.

I just had the same exact problem with my nexstar. I found that both the usb connections for the drive have to be directly connected to the computer, not a hub. Maybe that will help you if you haven't already figgured it out.
