External drive problems - Delayed Write Failed

I am experiencing problems when transferring large amounts of data to my brand new WD MyBook 500GB Essential, USB 2.0. In the middle of the file transfer, an error appears in the system tray, saying "Delayed Write Failed". Most of the data transferred is lost and I have to reconnect the power supply to the drive in order to access it again.

I have three logical NTFS partitions on the drive. I am trying to transfer files from a 7200RPM 160GB WD drive.

Windows XP Pro, SP2 installed.

I have tried transferring files from my laptop as well, but the same error appears, so I'm pretty sure it is the drive that is the problem.

I have been using a LaCie 250GB external USB2.0 drive for over a year without any errors, the MyBook was supposed to replace the LaCie, but does not seem to handle it.

What could cause this?

I have the same problem with my Seagate USB 2 external drive - just happened today for the first time after a year. Now it's doing it a lot. I have no idea...
 
I have unfortunately encountered this error before. It was due to a @#$%^& buggy Prolific controller in the enclosure. It pisses me off beyond belief especially at what the price was for it. However, for many you can find firmware updates - check the manufacturers website first to see if they have an upgrade, otherwise if you do have a prolific chip then you could try the generic firmware available at their website (AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!)
