I have a Metal Gear Box external enclosure with a 320 gb WD HDD inside. Recently, it stopped working and I could hear the HDD clicking when it was powered on. Since the drive was refurbished, I assumed the drive failed so I bought a brand new 250 gb WD drive with a manufature date of 2/07. I installed it in the case and powered it on. The brand new drive had the exact same clicking problem as the refurbished drive (the computer wont read it). I am thinking it might be the external case not providing enough power or maybe the IDE cable. Has anyone ever experienced problems with an external case or know what the problem might be? The odds of two WD drives failing back to back are pretty low I imagine...

Thanks for the replies in advance.

It could be any of the cases you suggested.

I would mount the drive internally to elimate it being faulty. Although rare, new drives do fail and if it does work you've isolated the enclosure as the problem.
