External Burner Mod Ideas

Recently, I bought a used external HP CD writer enclosure USB. It works with my TDK VELOCD but the drive is too short to fit properly in the bay. So, I was thinking of either designing an enclosure and using the guts or modifying an everyday household or military device into an enclosure. The problem is, I've run completely out of ideas. I'll post pics later of the enclosure and the drive.

Any ideas? I don't need an entire idea, just a cookie crumb to get me started. Either modified device ideas or enclosure design ideas.

Thanks!

get a full sized tower and put just the cd drive and the IDE->USB converter board in it

no one would see it coming :p

LOL, how true.

I think I am going to mount it on an aluminum plate about the same size as the drive and then mount the USB adapter components to the back of the plate. Seems very functional without wasted space. I have some carbon fiber vinyl that I can cover the ugly drive with and then I can dye the face plate black. Now I just need to come up with some aluminum sheet stock to cut on! Or I could use some plexi instead.

I'll add an led usb cable to finish off the look.

Ok, now that I have an idea, I'm having trouble with one little bit. I can't seem to get the bubbles out of this carbon fiber vinyl decal. I get a few to go away and a few others appear. I cleaned the surface well with isopropyl alcohol to make sure there were no oils left on the metal. Any ideas on a fixee fixee?

Worse case scenario, I can just paint the drive's shell.

Thanks for the tip. I also found a few other sites with info about tools and technique. I'll post the finished product when I'm done.
