found something disturbing today

Test machine Asus M6BNe Laptop
Enclosure #1 Kingwin 2.5" Aluminum external enclosure
Enclosure #2 Vibe 2.5" Cheap plastic garbage enclosure

Kingwin 2.5" + 40GB Samsung 5400RPM 8MB Cache HDD MAX transfer rate = 13MB/s (Dead solid on 13)
Vibe 2.5" + 20GB Hitachi 4200RPM 2MB Cache HDD MAX Transfer rate = 16-25MB/s (the drive is old, beaten, and crappy)

Kingwin 2.5" + 20GB Hitachi 4200RPM 2MB Cache HDD Max Transfer Rate = 13MB/s (same as above, its solid on 13MB/s)
Vibe 2.5" + 40GB Samsung 5400RPM 8MB Cache HDD MAX transfer rate = 33MB/s
(this is the max the drive can do unbuffered so the enclosure maybe faster)

My friend, the enclosure may be terrible but USB 1.1 would be unberarable. Try 1/10 of your Kingwin speed, under the absolute best conditions.

Thanks for the heads up, though as I wanted to purchase one of those devices and I didn't realize how different they can be. I mean when you look at them, they all really look the same.
 
the only problem is that you dont know till you test it, the kingwin enclosure is MORE expensive using better materials (aluminum) yet its crappier than the crappiest enclosure, the vibe enclosure isn't gonna get much cheaper.
 
I got that enermax enclosure, it's not the greatest, but it sure looks spiffy.

I'll test it out now too.
 
I got 13.8 Max speed with my 4200rpm drive, hmm, I'm thinking I might replace it now. In comparison my iPod w/ USB2 got 32.8 Max. I can't find that vibe enclosure anywhere..
 
I found it under a different name on Newegg and it looks the same in the picture. I just ordered it :)
 
I just got it in and have a peak performance on my 4200 of 35Mbps :D

Not a bad investment for triple the performance.
