Expanding Virtual Drives

I have a Dell server running ESXi 4.0. It has a few virtual servers, all running Windows Server 2008 R2. One of them has a D drive that's filling up. The D drive is a single, solid virtual drive file (.vmdk). it is currently 100 GB and I'd like to double it. I have the free, unallocated storage space available, but I wanted to confirm the steps.

If I shut the server down, can I go into the vSphere app and expand the drive? If so, I'm thinking I could then boot up the server, and use Disk Management to increase the size of the drive without issue, since it isn't the system volume.

Is my thinking correct, or am I missing some steps?
 
Are the servers clustered? Are you using iSCSI or NFS? If you are using iSCSI is the LUN big enough overall to handle the increase in size? If not, you could create another LUN and extend the first LUN into the new one.
 
Edit VM>change drive size to new size>go into VM and expand. Pretty easy stuff. Don't even have to shutdown the VM to do it.
 
just in case: obviously you need to go into the vm and extend the partition into the newly added space.
