Ethernet problem with MSI board

I have built my new computer and I am having some problems. I have the MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard, and used the setup disk included to load drivers. There are a number of drivers that failed to load. The first one I'm trying to get to work is the onboard ethernet. I keep getting the error:

Your computers firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. To use this device, contact your computers manufacturer to obtain a firmware or BIOS update.

I went to MSI's web site and downloaded a new driver for the ethernet but it says the same thing.

Am I doing something wrong? I am new to this, so I may have set up the BIOS wrong, but I checked that the LAN settings in the BIOS were enabled. I find it odd that an onboard component would not be able to load straight out of the box like this.
 
Was this motherboard bought brand new or used? And do you have any additional ethernet devices installed on the computer?
 
sounds like the mobo is messed up. RMA?

that scares me because I just bought this board..I hope it works ok!
 
yeah, never had that problem with my MSI RS480M2-IL. I suggest RMA if you've tried everything (try updating the chipset drivers first).
 
Out of curiousity, have you tried flashing the BIOS with the most current version? Might fix it up.

Surprised that this wasn't mentioned earlier.

Do it and report back.
 
Why would we mention that eariler? We prefer resorting to most unlikely scenario and most costly/complicated fix in my world....therefore it is probably a problem with the CPU having 1 pin bent, thus causing issues..I suggest a new computer. :confused: :p
 
I haven't tried flashing the BIOS. I called MSI and they told me how to do it, but I don't want to buy a floppy drive only to find out that I still have a bad board. I called NewEgg and they gave me an RMA number, so I'll try another board.

Speaking of which, since I'll have to take everything off the MB, I'll need to clean off the thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink (won't I? I would think so). That means I'll need to get some for when I put it back together. I think I may have some at a friends house that I bought from Radio Shack back when I repaired my Powerbook. Is that stuff ok, or should I get more expensive stuff?

Completly unrelated, the case comes with two temperature readers, what's the best way to use those? I just taped the CPU one to the bottom of my heatsink next to the CPU, and the one for the HD I slid into a gap under the heatsink of my video card (I thought I'd rather know the temp of that). Is that ok?

Completly unrelated part 2. I'm also not sure of what I should set some of the options in the BIOS to. Is there a good place to find info on that?

Enough trouble out of me for now.
