ESXi 5 odd network issue

Hi all virtualizers,

First some info:

Supermicro X9SCM-F mobo
Intel 82574L NIC(both mgmt and vswitch, only card activated), connected at 1Gbps FD.
2 active VM's(OpenIndiana w/napp-it + W2K8 Server)
NOTICE! The above 2 active VM's run on seperate harddrives.

Strange problem occured with my home ESXi 5 box yesterday. I was watching a full blu-ray rip from my media server(napp-it), which uses about 50Mbit/s from that VM. At the same time I had some downloads running on the W2K8 VM, pulling about 50Mbit/s as well.

I noticed the download speed was throttling all the way down to ~30Mbit/s, while the movie was running. When I paused the movie, up it went again to 50Mbit/s.

I tried this multiple times as this occured very odd to me, resulting in the same as above.

Here's what I've tried so far:

* New lan cable
* Another switchport
* Connect directly to router
* Checked IRQ for conflicts in BIOS.
* Disabled Traffic shaping in ESXi.

After trying the above, I activated the 2nd NIC on my board and installed that for use with ESXi. Added the W2K8 VM to use that vSwitch on which the new NIC resides, and voila. I can stream and download at full speed again.

So I've solved it, but I'm still curious as to why on earth that NIC seems to be capping out at approximately 100Mbit/s, when I've verified numerous times, that the speed is 1000Mbit/s through the vSphere client.

Any pointers or even similar experiences? Please see screenshots attached.

I had a problem before where my sickbeard instance was chewing up lots of hard drive bandwidth (some bug with the watch directory), and it was causing my uTorrent to report disk overloaded in the lower left hand side of uTorrent which killed my torrents.
 
Is your switch a managed switch? Can you verify that switchport is running at 1000Mbs?

Not managed, I can only verify it by looking at the color of the LED on the switch and checking the status in ESXi.
