I've got ESXi 5.1 running on a Supermicro X7DAL-E mobo. The board has 6 SATA ports running through Intel ESB2 chipset, but only ports 0-3 work. I tried plugging in an additional SSD into ports 4 and 5 but neither show up as devices in vSphere - I can't add them as datastores. Ports 4-5 don't even show up in the mobo bios and I can't find any option to enable them.

Now I'm researching options for an add-on SATA controller, but I'm having difficulty determining what options are compatible with ESXi 5.1.

Any recommendations?

You could try the dual port 3Ware 9650SE-2LP. I ran that successfully in RAID 1 and RAID 0 on various WD black's and RE4's. Shouldn't be too much if all you need are an additional 2 drives.
