Currently, I am running an esxi 4 box at home and even though it’s not a very efficient method of backing it up, I shut down all of my vms once a week and copy them over to another computer. I know that getting a paid version of the software enables this capability, but I am curious as to what everyone else does that doesn't have a paid license for backups.

That looks good, but since it takes snapshots of the VM's, does that mean the VM's must be thick provisioned? I've noticed that if you take a snapshot of a thin disk it converts it to thick.
 
ignore that - it's just a GUI oddity, since delta files are technically thick disks that are COW.
