esxi 4.1 - Quick question

Does anyone have any recommendations for a SATA controller and an ethernet card that is usable under esxi? I'm looking for pci cards, not mobos if it can be avoided.

Ya, I found those lists, but going through each item and attempting to find something that'll work is arduous. Well, and I'm trying to do this on the cheap. This isn't for production in any way, shape or form. Just for my own learning purposes. I already have a process, memory drives and mobo that'll mostly work. I just don't have any ethernet cards or storage adapters that'll work.

The nic should work, but I'm not sure if the storage adapter will work. I see someone mention that it works under 3.5, but I'm not sure how well that would carry over to 4.1.
 
Intel Pro 1000 MT PCI --> old generation cheaper. Amazon info.
Intel Pro 1000 GT PCI --> newer generation slightly more expensive. Amazon info.

PCI cards, not PCI-Express.

The suggested websites are good reference sites. For storage card, If you are just testing, not after absolute performance, look for inexpensive Silicon Image AHCI-based PCI add-on card (as you requested). There is actually a file inside ESXi 4.1 that lists further detail. I have less certainty about storage cards so please double-check before buying.
 
intel 1000 pro GT is the DESKTOP card. Its cheap and works great. So in other words... the link you posted for the NIC is definitely the way to go. I'm using 2 of them now ;).

That particular link isn't very helpful in these situations, as it's not a recommendation list. Also, there are no prices or availability (can I get it new? eBay?) for those devices, making it very difficult to use for specing out a box.

If you've got a PCIe slot, I recommend the Intel Pro 1000 PT. I got mine for $40 on eBay, and it works great with ESXi.

Plus, with PCIe you can do a full Gigabit/second. With PCI, you're limited to about 200 Mbps.

As for SATA controller, you'd have to go upmarket to get one that does actual hardware RAID. The inexpensive RAID SATA controllers aren't actually hardware RAID, they're software RAID or "fake RAID".
