ESX power management

Any short and simple rules of thumb for enabling power savings on ESX/ESXi boxes?

My default, it's set to high performance. Setting to Medium / Low resulted in some marked savings in power... a solid 30% reduction with no impact to performance that I can ascertain.

What I'm less sure about are the guests. What power settings should I enable for typical *nix/windows guests? Do they even matter? Turning on power management in solaris for example doesn't do anything since vmware is just reporting a fixed clock speed and (as far as I can tell) no host power management capabilities back to the client.

On the other hand if I can ever get RDMs working, I wonder whether guest policies for say hard drive spindown would apply.

Any tips on this? Did a forum search, didn't come up with much.
