where you can buy Electro-static discharge bags to shipback hardrives? I'm trying to rma my western digital drive, and they say on their site they don't take them back if they aren't in a ESD bag. is there any local places that might carry these?

go to any old mom & pop computer store and ask for a couple, i'm sure they'd be glad to give you as many as you need. We've got more of those things laying around them i know what ot do with

don't think there are many mom and pop stores. its all compusa, bestbuy, and circuit city out here.

I usually do advanced replacement on HDs. And I ship them back in the box, bag, and foam they sent the replacement in.

If that's out of the question, try asking the repair sections of BB and Compusa. Might find a nice person will to give you one out of a HD they just installed.

Will they accept the drive if you wrap it in aluminum foil?

Electronics parts places have those bags, but doesn't everybody save them when they buy a mobo or HD?

I wouldn't wrap in foil, they won't take it back. ;)
There will be a nice guy at one of the big places. Take a look for a mom & pop shop though, you'll be surprised where they're hiding. :)

I'm sorry but that made me laugh for a second ;) but yeah, definately do NOT wrap the hard drive in aluminum foil, they will reject it in an instand when they recieve it. Most places have so many of these bags they toss tons of them a day, just ask for one, i'm sure no matter where you go, they'll be happy to help you out if your polite.

Is there any valid reason why they won't accept an HD wrapped in foil? After all it's not a motherboard with a battery on it, and a guy at a local Intel plant said that foil worked OK if the circuit board wasn't too big.
