Entry Level RAID setup ?

I am interested in building a simple, small, inexpensive stand alone RAID setup. I would like to be able to access it through my lan.
 
Yes, that is exactly what I would like. Also, I have been kicking the idea of making it a rack mount. However, I am trying to keep cost way down.. so this may not be the time to start that project.

Really, there's so many different ways you could go with this. It helps alot if you ask an actually question instead of posting a statement.

How many users? How much space? OS preference? etc...give more info and we can give much better suggestions.
 
some people on here have started to look at free-nas, which is a BSD based NAS operating system, however I have heard some bad stories, especially when it comes to software raid.

OK ... sorry for being so vague. I am bad about that. Let's see, as far as users there will be about 3. Space, hrmm... as much as I can afford. I would like to have around 300-500 gig... OS preference is Windows. I do have some limited knowledge of linux... if it could be setup fairly easily to operate on linux and that is what is recommended, I believe I could hack it. Otherwise... all my machines use windows and that is what I am most familiar with.
 
Very inexpensive RAID capable NAS (NDAS) device?

You can put a nice size hard drive in there and hook it up via your LAN cable to your router/hub. Then you can add on another one and set them up in RAID.(buy 2 of these enclosures for RAID) It works great because I'm using it right now on a network of about 25 computers at one of my alternate part time jobs. Its a very nice enclosure, and even includes a silent fan on the bottom of it to cool your drive. What I really like about it vs normal windows network drive sharing, is it supports more than 10 simultaneous connections. Under XP, it only allows 10 active connections to the "shared" drive at a time. I think you have to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 to get around that. With this NDAS enclosure, the software that it comes with makes it independent from windows and easy to setup. It automatically connects to the drive(s) every time you start up windows, and they show up as just another hard drive on your computer.
 
I had seen that model on newegg... it looks simple enough. One person was complaining about the documentation being horrible. So long as it works I don't care. What does it take to set two of them up in a raid configuration ? What type of drives do you have in your setup ?
As far as 10 users being the max, that will not be an issue on my system.

What exactly does the software do to make it independent from windows? Does it have a unix driver too and a macos driver?
 
Okay, if I bought two (2) of the above mentioned NAS RAID boxes at $70 each + shipping I would be in it for around $150.
How much more expensive to get a rack mount case that could take 2 (or more) hard drives ? Can anyone give me their idea of a rack mount RAID server that would meet my criteria ?

I'm guessing it's just a SMB or nfs share with software to automount it, and possibly something to make it look like it's not a network drive. But since newegg isn't loading, I have no idea.

yeah I am having problems with their site too. I cannot follow deep links, but when I go to the frontpage and then to a deep link it works fine.
