I'd like to paint my chieftec dragon case with engine enamel and bake it to get a nice hard shell. However, the front facade is that vinyl plastic crap and i want to know if that will melt? If so, does any one have any bright ideas for a hard coat on my plastic front.

Well I baked my headlights for my car once and they had some plastic to the housing... I did 150 degrees for about 20mins . Not sure how much longer I would go though.

Hey, if your drive bezel covers are made of the same material, and you didn't plan on stealthing the drives, why not try painting one of those, and baking the enamel on it? That should give you an idea of how long you can heat it......and if it melts down, it's no big loss, compared to losing the whole front of the case, right? :D

Just make sure to use some cheap aluminum pan, instead of your the good baking sheets that your wife/gf/significant other uses!! LOL ;)

Thats an excelent idea. I'll try that. if it doesnt work i'll use the melted plastic to make chrismas orniments.

Vinyl dye or plastic paint (i.e. Krylon Fusion) is probably going to be your best bet. It chemically bonds with the plastic, so it's very durable. I used it on a mouse at work and after two years it shows no signs of wear. I've tried baking the finish on plastic pieces before and they all melted to some extent.

did you have to prime it or sand coats.

No primer and no sanding whatsoever. Just make sure the surface is very clean so it'll bond properly.
