Encoding to 5.1 for optical transfer

I've searched and have found information, however many of the links were lost.

What I am looking for is a good sound card that can encode games and DVDs to 5.1 "on the fly" to allow me to use an optical link between my computer and surround receiver. I use my motherboard's on-board audio now, a MSI KT4V, however it does not encode games. DVDs work fine in 5.1. Now I know that the DVDs were originally encoded in 5.1, and I also know that games are not encoded in 5.1. I just want to know a few choices on sound cards, and even new motherboards that will encode games and DVDs to 5.1 on the fly. I've played Unreal Tournament, FarCry, and other FPSs in surround before, and really want to have my own "5.1 gaming" set-up.

I've heard that the nForce chipset mobo's do encode on the fly. Is this correct?

The reason that I want to use optical is because a digital cable converter uses my coax S/PDIF input. I also have no individual 5.1 inputs on my Receiver.

I'm willing to purchase a new motherboard, so I'm open to hear advise about motherboards that can do what I want.

Oh, and if there is something that allows S/PDIF input as well as output, I'd consider that as well.
 
Your only options are the Nforce2 lines of motherboards with Soundstorm, or the new X-Mystique line of sound cards that can only be bought on Ebay right now. One would be a huge step backwards, the other is dicey, considering how badly you'll get gouged for it. The X-Mystique is supposed to be coming to the states soon though.
 
Damn. Just wasted $12 on an optical cable. I was wondering the same thing but my search didnt produce this thread.
 
The answer to this question is in our proto-FAQ. Take a gander please, and critique my explaination. Is it clear?
 
Yeah I looked through the FAQ several times, each time picking up something I had missed before. After I had posted, I looked back through once more, and read very carefully the parts about using the digital out. It seemed very clear to me. However other people may want more clarity.. I can't really explain that part, I don't know where to start. But from what I got out of the FAQ, it's very well-organized and well-done.
 
Just made my recommendation in the other thread. I recommended that he add the words coaxial/optical into that section somehow as that is what most people would search for versus digital output.
