Emulator is really slow

I just downloaded a snes emulator and some roms (which I own the actual cartriages for except my snes broke) and it works, but for some reason, even with my computer, which should effortlessly run the emulator, the frame rate often drops. This is very annoying and I was wondering if anyone knew what was causing this.
 
Which emulator are you using? I think SNES9X was the one I used to use (or a similar name).
 
What emulator are you using? For SNES use SNES9X. I can play anygames with it on a PII 266 with no drops in frame rate....
