First, sorry if this has been asked before. Search did not yield much help.

I have a "server" that has two 320gb SATA Western Digital drives as a RAID1 set. The motherboard is a Tul that uses a ULI M1573 chipset for the SATA. It's not a good controller. Technically it's "fakeraid" (from the Linux world).

I have been looking for something that can alert me on a drive failure. Preferably this would be by email. Anything would be better that what I have found which is nothing.

Windows or Linux?

One method would be to get your self a S.M.A.R.T. monitor. And have that program e-mail you. I would think that are programs that can monitor log files and send you alerts when configured items change like a missing or failed hard drive.

HDD Health can send you e-mails or network messages when a failure is predicted.

Would this work for you or are you looking for a more robust solution?
 
If you're using the "hardware" raid (as opposed to LSR) I have no ideas. Raid cards, in my experience, don't support standard SMART tools, and the cheap ones don't even have their own versions.

But if you're using LSR, try 'man mdadm'. That should do it ;)

 
unless your RAID driver/ software either comes with such a feature or at least logs it in the event log, I think you may be sol.
