eMachine c2685 sound

My sister's boyfriend deleted a file that "looked like a winamp file" and now the sound on his eMachine c2685 doesn't work.

When they first told me about it, all they said was that he deleted the driver for it and the sound didn't work any more, so I told them to just go to the manufacturer's site and get the sound drivers for it and reinstall (this was before they told me it was an eMachine).

So I go look on the eMachine website to see if there are any drivers for download... which... eMachine has none (apparently you're not supposed to update your drivers or anything from them...). Finally, they tell me it was "like a winamp file" and yeah, I have no idea what he deleted now, cause he doesn't remember the filename either.

So any suggestions on how to fix this?

Was he smart enough (or maybe that should be dumb enough?) to empty the recycle bin?

If not it's an easy fix.

They're both not really technically inclined (or at least she isn't, and from what I've heard he isn't either), but I know she's at least smart enough to know about the recycle bin... I'll ask them if I can get them to answer the phone.

I'm pretty sure they did empty it, so what other solutions would there be?

The next thing is to figure out what doesn't work.
Sometimes that is worse then fixing the problem... especially by phone with non tech savy users.


Is it just Winamp that doesn't work?
If so just reinstall it.

hahah thanks... you're probably saying something along the lines of "this guy didn't even search for these things they were so easy to find!" I say it all the time when people ask me for links to stuff.

I'll tell them to reinstall winamp, and then have to update the driver to see if either of those fixes it.
