something's wrong with my computer... i built it bout a year ago, but within the past week or so it's been freezing up. about 3 minutes after starting, during which time i can do whatever, it freezes, even in bios if i'm there too long. The screen stays as is, it doesnt go black or anything, and it'll just stay like that, the mouse and keyboard don't respond. once it's frozen, if i just restart it won't post, i have to turn it off then turn it back on for it to start up again.

the only thing i've changed recently is updating the video drivers to the 2.1.4.2a dna-drivers (based on CAT 4.2)

any suggestions... i'm hoping it's not a virus, i have norton, the restart thing kinda confuses me though.

also, why would series of small vertical lines be appearing on the screen? there's several columns of 10 lines or so across the screen, and get worse in various ways in games, i just have to restart and they go away (temporarily) for a bit.

any help at all is appreciated,

jeremy

sounds like your over heating to me. Either your pgrphics card, or CPU, make sure all the fans are running well.

It could also be the PSU.

Test the PSU (or try another one) and run the system outside the case. If the problem persists it's time to narrow things down by removing and swapping parts.

exact same situation i was in. Went for about a month then my PSU blew out. Got a new one and better CPU cooling and everything is fine. Pretty common problem

Well, I think before buying a new PSU, you should probably tell us what kind of supply you've got now -- then the unanimous decision might become somehow more unanimous. Alright, forget that last part, just tell us what brand it is.
