I'm planning to start bidding and stuff. Are things alot cheaper there? any do's and don'ts, tips? thanks
 
stuff is generally going to be cheaper on ebay. but this thread doesnt belong in general hardware.
 
the thing about ebay, is that in every auction someone is ripped off. Either the seller doesn't get nearly what it's worth, the buyer pays more than retail, or the item is not as described.

If you pick your auctions very carefully, you can get good parts for cheap, but WATCH OUT. Personally, I wouldn't rely on ebay for ALL my parts...way too much of a headache to do that much research and make sure every auction is legit and cheap enough for you. You'll end up winning multiple auctions or paying more than you wanted.
Just use ebay for a few key parts, and always check feedback before bidding.
 
Newer parts aren't much cheaper on ebay compared to newegg or some other store. Older parts are really cheap though. I just got an old scsi cable for $.01. The fact that nobody else bid on it kinda worries me though. Just be sure to read the auction carefully so you know exactly what you are going to get and also check the seller's feedback. I know some people build entire systems with stuff they buy on ebay, but I would never use something from ebay in my main rig. I just don't know what that stuff has been through. Also, you have to think about how these people are able to sell stuff for below retail.
 
I built my whole system on ebay.

Tips:

Never bid on something when the seller has 0 feedbacks.

Never bid when a person has more than 1 negative feedbacks.

Never bid when a seller as drasticly changes his or her selling pattern,
for instance, if a seller generally sells toys and baseball cards every now and again, and suddenly is sell tons of electronics all at once, its mostly likely a stolen account and a scam.

Watch out for the scam bids, they advertise really cheap electronics and says in small print, "this is an auction on information on how to get cheap electronics"

If its too good to be true, it probally is.

Your best bet is to buy from "super sellers" sellers with at least 100+ positive feedback.


Ebay can be much cheaper, but you have to be patient and wait for the right deal.
