EAX hogs CPU resources...

I'm a regular player of CoD, and I usually have EAX 3 enabled (I have an audigy 2), and it runs fine most of the time -- however, when more than a couple people right next to me start shooting my frames drop from upwards of 100 to 25 at some points (especially when that really fast firing PPSH starts up). I switched to EAX 2, and it *seems* to be better, however I'm not really sure.

Does anybody here know about relative CPU usage of the different sound settings? I absolutely can't go back to miles 2d, it sounds awful (which is weird, because it sounds better on my secondary 'puter with onboard sound...).

It'd be nice if someone actually came out with a soundcard that would actually process sound without using the CPU.

I'd like to know as well, I currently have what I consider a decent rig an Amd 64 3000+, Audigy 2(updated to EAX4), 6800 GT(current driver 65.73) and a decent pair of logitech z680's. I have COD set at max settings everything but it sitll should be able to eat this game alive. I to noticed large dips in fps when heavy shooting would commence. I was really surprised when I switched over to miles fast and noticed my frame rate problem(not really just dips down to the low 30's) was all but gone in the most intense area(like the 1st level of the Russian campaign). Do I just need to upgrade my soundcard to the latest audigy 2zs or could a new driver solve this issue?

To my understanding, using EAX will always give you performance hit, in exchange for the special reverb effects. In other words, you don't get those effects for free.
