Hardware
E8400 - stock speed
Gigabyte P35-DS3L

Cooling
Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme w/ Scyte S-Flex 1200rpm
Exhaust - 1x Antec Tricool on Low
Intake - 1x Antec Tricool on Low
Bottom chamber - 1x Antec Tricool on Low

So these are the readings I'm getting. These are idle temps. I'm thinking maybe these could be better. Yes, the TRUE is bolted down as securely as I could get it. The thing is, the stock intel fan performed only 2-3 degrees idle worse than the TRUE in my system.
Under full load, I get about 10c increase over idle.

What do you guys think? Okay?

and yeah, HWMonitor on the left displays the temp with TjMax of 105 whereas Real Temp on the right uses 95c

The 72C I believe is the CPU temp. The core max is 95/105c? Correct me if I'm wrong

As far as I know, some E8400's are reporting weird temps.
I've been browsing around and it seems a lot of people are getting weird numbers on the 45nm systems. I could be wrong, but it seems like too consistent a problem to be a coincidence.

That pic looks like 46C? Is that idle?

My E8400 @ 3GHz temps (C)

using stock cooler:
idle CPU case 4 above ambient
idle cores 22 above ambient

load CPU case 35 above ambient
load cores 43 above ambient

using TRUE cooler:
idle CPU case 1 above ambient
idle cores 20 above ambient

load CPU case 14 above ambient (21 deg cooler with TRUE)
load cores 30 above ambient (13 deg cooler with TRUE)

From what I've read of the Intel specs, CPU case temp max is 72.4, Core max temp is 100 (for my stepping). I was getting worried when my CPU case temp was getting close to 65 under load with the stock cooler (and without overclocking).

So being the paranoid, anal person I am, I immediatly purchased a TRUE cooler (best write ups around at the time) and some MX2 thermal paste. The TRUE is a huge beast (just fits my case) but well worth the effort IMO. I've since jumped to 3.6Ghz and temps are still good. I can now sleep at night :)

Those seem pretty high for idle. My OC'd Q6600 with the EXACT same HSF and fan setting as you idles lower (32-35C). Ambient is generally about 68-70F.

Could be misreporting temps with all the talk of funky stuff going on with 45nm chips.

Temps are way off dependant on programs. I dont know what to believe. My old 680i board had temps up 10c on everything compared to this 780i board. really strange. This is 1.4v, so not stock, for sure.

I have a TRUE coupled with a 95cfm fan on my e8400 running at 4.3ghz on 1.4vcore (cpu-z).
I get idle temps of around 30c (was lower before i got the 3870x2 and it started dumping hot air into my case :p ) ... and load temps are at max 55c (after hours of prime). This is temps via speedfan. I will get real temp and core temp and compare... but have used core temp and seen it overstate temps before.

Yea, my idle temps are 30c usually, In that screenshot I VNC'ed in from work, so my CPU is at 86% use. I load at 52'c, with the same voltage. My chip isnt stable above 3.9ghz tho, no matter how much voltage I push to it (under 1.5) I settled at 3.85 @ 1.4 and primed for 24 hours problem free. its fine fo rnow.

The stock intel fan performed a little worse than the TRUE on load. Going by "Real Temp", I'd get about 50c on load with the TRUE and about 56c with the intel fan. But of course, if you go by everything else that uses the 105c TjMax value, then everything is actually 10c higher.

So yeah.. all this temperature business with the 45nm coupled with the new DTS temp reading method has confused things quite a bit. I still thought the TRUE would perform a bit better though than the stock though.

I'm still happy with it. My system is practically inaudible now.

Do the new chips have flat IHS'es?

I had a vanilla TRU, which made contact with only 1/3 of my cpu..

Press a razor blade on your cpu and check for light leakage while holding it up to a lightsource.

It's a pain in the ass to remove the TRUE, I must have did it 4 or 5 times before I figured out both the base of the TRU and my CPU were malformed. It's definitely worth to check.

The TRUE should blow the stock cooler out of the water on both idle and load temps.

Hmm. I get around the same temps on my current OC. My fan is at a lower RPM (1098) but my loads are higher than yours which is max at 63c running small tft. Same case and fans all set on low also. I would think the TRUE would get better temps.
