e8400 major issues

Well at least I think it's the processor. I don't know too much about the way things work and help would be the greatest things in the world right now.

My previous setup
e8400
hd3870
4gigs ram
450w psu
all stock

Now it's currently
e8400 -same
hd4850
4gigs ram - same
850w psu
all stock

At first I thought it was a video card problem, but I did some testing
Crysis Warhead runs at a maximum of 17fps and averages around 9-12fps on both Enthusiast settings at 1440x900 and Mainstream settings at 800x484.
Call of Duty 5 and Fallout 3 run way slower and CODWAW has actually shut my whole PC down a couple of times. 3dmark06 CPU test has actually shut down my PC once.

Now no games can run without shutting my whole PC down after some use.

The 3d mark CPU score is 1816 (other people testify and average of 3000 stock and the video card score is more or less the same as other people's 4850. Even the Vista CPU score is 5.0, much lower than the 5.7 it had before.

A few things, drivers/bios are up to date, the slow down did not occur after a hardware install, rather, during a round of CODWAW (it shut down during gameplay and never played the same again). The video card does not get warm or hot. Everything is installed properly, it is all detected (at the proper speeds) and double checked. I need help please...
 
Yeah there's something really off about your CPU score.

These are my 3Dmark06 CPU numbers:
3Ghz (stock) - 2750.
4Ghz - 3700.
 
You didn't need to upgrade your PSU for that card. Hell, If you only run 1 HDD and 1 or 2 fans, and no lights or other BS, you probably would of had enough power for 2, or at least close to it.
 
Haha, yea that's true. It's more of a future proof. I plan on doing crossfire when the 4850 begins to lag behind the times, not to mention getting a quad-core for rendering (when I can afford it). I got a 100 bucks off from Newegg with the video card so why not (in the end, it cost as much as a 600w). As far as I know, an overpowered PSU isn't cause for an underpowered CPU so it doesn't matter what I have. Also the CPU worked for about a week with the new components before it began to fail on me.

NO reason to explain yourself for the PSU. So you have updated latest drivers for the video card huh? Have you tried an older version of the drivers and making sure to wipe out any other drivers?

Did your CPU test change when you ran benchmarks? Everything plugged in correctly for power on the video card and motherboard? Have you tried reformatting? Got plenty of voltage going to your processor and memory? Just a few ideas to get you thinking. Really weird issue you're having.

I only updated the drivers of the video card (and the chipset) after the first few crashes in hopes to solve the existing problem. When I got the video card, I used the included drivers with the old chipset drivers without fail for over a week with no issues. The updates visibly changed nothing. The problems seemed to arise during normal usage (including games)

The only benchmark I had for the CPU was the included Vista one at 5.7 after the first few shut downs from playing a game, I re-tested recently and it's currently at 5.0. The recent 3dmark06 tests and re-tests were the only ones I've ever done

I've tried every basic solution I could think of. Everything is plugged in correctly. I reformatted after the updates failed. Ive had the original setup for almost a year with no problems and haven't changed any internal setup.

I don't know how to check how much voltage is getting to the processor and memory, that might be a good start.
 
You should verify that your CPU is running full-speed...e.g. your scores almost seem like it's only running at 2Ghz, e.g. 6 x 333 (instead of 9 x 333).

Now I don't know why Speedstep would start getting retarded all of a sudden...but stranger things have happened I guess. You should mention what mobo/bios/chipset you are running and update your sig with this data.
 
You might not have the heatsink on correctly... It seems like the CPU is throttling back due to excessive heat - that is expected behavior.

Thank you, that was exactly it.
Everything runs great at full now. My SM 3.0 score even jumped up 700 points
