E7200 vs. E8400

How much of a real world performance gain would i see between these processors. The E72 falls well within my budget at $119 while the E8400 is $170. If anyone has had experience OC'ing the E7200, can it easily be clocked to 3.00, and if so, would it perform the same (almost) as the E8400, minus the extra 3MB of cache?
 
Almost every E7200 should be able to make to at least 3GHz. It you could somehow subtract the extra cache, it should be only slightly slower (very small) since it will be at a lower fsb (316 vs 333MHz)

But the E8400s also overclock well...

Buy whichever you can afford without overextending yourself. Tech always gets cheaper. If you want numbers, post what applications you plan on using or resolutions if you want game data. Maybe someone will post some benchmarks.
 
Very nice artice Pnanasnoic. Thanks. Looks like it put up a pretty good fight with the E8400 in most games and was on par with it on a few. Maybe 5-8 FPS more from the latter of the two. It fell short of the quads, but that's expected. But apparently its easily overclockable and for 50 bucks less it seems i'd be stupid not to take it, as it will perform the tasks i need it to. Plus, i'm sure it'll crush the pants off my current Pentium D 280.

Spend 120 bones on the E7200 and later on down the road, take advantage of the next CPU that drops drastically lower if need be.

E7200 it is.
 
Interesting review. Unless I'm reading wrong, looks like the e7200 at 4.0ghz barely beat/kept up with an e8400 at stock in gaming tests. Surprising that the additional 3mb of cache on the e8400 makes up for almost a 1ghz clock speed deficit compared to the e7200 OC.

Of course, price is a lot lower on the e7200 (especially if you grabbed one for $80 at Fry's last week), but still. I would've though a 4.05ghz e7200 would trounce a 3.0ghz e8400. You learn something new everyday.
 
OH yea, another thing. I would opt for the e8400 if they saw a price drop. Any chance we'll see a small price drop on any of the 45nm Wolfdales once Nehalem hits, or has that ship came and sailed? That would be nice.

Probably a pipe dream though.

And yea, you do learn something new everyday. I learned i should watch prices more carefully!!! $80 for the e7200?? lol. I would've picked that up in a heartbeat.
 
the best deals are usually at Fry's

That $80 E7200 was at Frys.com and they have a lot of instore specials also. $100 E7200/ecs motherboard combos are common. They have also had $150 E8400/ecs combos (those were OEM cpus I believe while most e7200 combo deals are retail cpus)
 
The E8400/ECS combo is available till Tuesday at LA/OC Fry's for $150

Don't know if it is a retail cpu though. Motherboard is an ECS G31T-M

You can get around $25 or so for the motherboard if you don't want to keep it
 
Yea i didn't see the PHenom doing that either.

I've purchased the new Gigabyte EP45-UD3R to slap the E7200 in. Hopefully it'll make me proud lol.

I'm thinking of picking up the same components. There's a newegg combo for the EP45-UD3R and E7200 for $225. That too bad at all

E7200 at Fry's was $80 two weeks ago.

E8500 at Fry's for $150 two weeks ago.

Christmas will have more incentives.
 
If your gaming the -3MB cache will make a difference. I would recommend E8x00 for gaming over E7x00 any day. Most other things you won't notice a big difference though, and many people have OC'ed the E7200 to 4GHz.

u mean Black Friday. But, with the outlook of the overall economy, there will be loads of deals.

I picked up the E7200 + ECS 7050 + antec solo mobo at fry's. That was one sweet ass DEAL! $20 for my antec solo...WOOT!

Going to mod my antec solo for a future build. ( i need quietness) :p
