E6600 -> E8400 Questions

I've been using an E6600 for 2 years, overclocked at 3.2GHz with stock volts. A buddy is willing to buy it off me for $100, which I can put toward a $150 E8400.

Before I do that, I have a couple of questions:

1. My E6600 is cooled by a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, which I didn't personally install. If I were to swap it out for the E8400, would I have to remove the motherboard from the case to get the Ultra-120 off?

2. Is it worth it?

50 dollars to get a E8400? Heck yeah it's worth it! You might get lucky with one of those newer E0 steppings and start overclocking at 4GHz and up!

Im just curious if you got the B3 or G0? I am assuming B3 since its old. Im glad to see its 3.2ghz on stock volts bc i got stuck with a B3 I just bought and wanted to do 400x8 with my artic freezer 7 pro. I hope I can do it on stock volts too

It is worth it but maybe you would consider a Q6600 if you have any multi-tasking needs( don't be afraid the q6600 OCs like a monster).

You can easily OC the e8400 to 3.8ghz without much tinkering. 4+ ghz is very possible since you already have one of the best coolers on the market. Land an E0 stepping and you're pretty much guaranteed to be able to run the e8400 @ 4+ ghz. Not always the case, but for the most part it seems to be.

And yes, it is definitely worth the upgrade for $50.

B2 stepping. I could undervolt it to 1.275v on my old mobo and still get 3.2 stable, but the lowest voltage on my IP35 Pro is 1.3v. I need 1.35v for 3.4GHz. I'm running 356x9, FWIW.

As for Q6600, I'm only really upgrading so I can run Namco System 22 games at 100% in MAME, which uses 2 cores.

How do you figure? If I'm reusing the same cooler, won't I just have to replace the four screws?

You'd only need to remove the motherboard if you were planning on changing coolers.
