e6600 and e6400

1. E6600 and 1 GB RAM

2. E6400/E6300 and 2 GB RAM

i wont overclock and i wont put money for computer in future.
 
get the E6400 and 2GB if you arent gonna overclock.
More memory is good..trust me. coming from 256mb to 2gb is unbelievable! :D
The E6400 will definitley be faster than the E6300 without an overclock.
 
it MAJORLY depends on what you will be doing. If you are a gamer and play alot of the new titles like the Battlefield series, Quake, or other upcoming titles then the 2Gb of ram will benefit you quite a bit. If you are not a gamer, the extra cache and clock speed will be more beneficial over the extra gig of ram. Just blanketly saying #1 or #2 without knowing what you plan to do with the computer is blasphemy...

You a gamer/web brower or are you an encoder/photoshopper?

If you are just a gamer go with choice 2.
If you encode go with 1 and then grab another gig of ram 6 months down the road or something.
 
i know you said you're not going to overclock, but 6300's seem to have a ton of room, you could probably easily get it to 2ghz (6600ish speeds) without incurring too much of a heat gain. then on top of the mild overclock you would have that 2gb of ram to throw into the mix and be very happy with the whole thing.
 
I have an e6300 and 2 GB of RAM in my browsing/email/itunes/digital photo/foldingcomputer.......It runs at 2.2 GHZ on nothing more than asking the auto-overclock to knock it up there. I have no temp issues on stock air cooling and it runs like lightening.
I'm very pleased with the choice.
I have a 7600GT for video and do play a little on it.....it runs Prey on a 2007FPW at 16x10 resolution without a hitch.
 
NEITHER, the 6400 and 2x512 will pull much tighter timings then with 2x1024, if your going 6600 then you can OC higher and loosen up the timings with more memory banks it doesnt matter as much you get raw speed to compensate.
 
In mosts tasks, the extra 2mb cache has only a few % difference. An extra gig of ram can however make a HUGE difference. If you play any new games with ultra details on, you NEED 2gb of ram. End of story.

Also do you pklan on overclocking. Becaue you can get an e6400 for $200 and save some money, and overclock to 3.2ghz with ease. Many getting 3.6ghz with 1.5v. You're obviously cost concience, since you're asking this question.

I say e6400 and 2gb of any cheap ddr 800 ram, and you should be golden for 3.2ghz

As far as the timings issue goes, my $160 set of 2x1gb patriot 5300 does 4-4-3-4 @ 2.45v. 4-4-4-4 @ 2.35v 530mhz. Max stable clock is 565mhz 5-5-5-5 2.15v. 2x512mb is for benchers who are looking for the absolute max speed and thats about it.

2 gigs definately, however the extra 2mb cache does improve the performance a noticable amount. This can be seen in the Super PI scores the easiest, the conroe core thrives with extra cache. The new Conroe-L only have 512k cache with the benchmarks released you can see a significant performance decrease compared with a same clocked 2mb cache conroe or 4mb cache.

With 4x to 8x more cache I would think there would be a significant difference! Normally, when you drop 4x the amount of cache from like the Pentium 4 to Celeron, the difference I think was even larger! From the 6600 to the Conroe-L Celeron with only 512Kb of cache is an 8x difference!!!

Super Pi is just about the only thing that i've seen show significant improvement.

Go with the e6600/1GB Ram. I say this only because I think curiosity will get the best of you as you ponder what it'll be like with 2GB RAM and sooner or later you'll get another 1GB to add to it. :p
 
I wouldn't even consider building a "new" system with less than 2GB of RAM, especially with Vista almost here, and games having over 500MB of textures. Heck, my "old" Prescott system from 2002 has 2GB of memory. I would start with 2GB, and move to the coveted 4GB later on. :)

though I'd probably had gone for the 6400, as not to be limited on the OC by the mobo or ram possibly.
