E6420 @ 3.7 Air Cooling

Not trying to be a buzzkill here, but how long is it Orthos/Prime95 stable?

It would crash after 30 mins in Orthos but will play all my games @ max settings for Hours :) I dont really go by program that stresses my computer. If my comp can paly and do multiple task without crashing then im satisfied :D

thats how it should be. people obsess and kill themsevles over orthos and prime are so pathetic there are no words. thats like saying a $100k mercedes sedan is not a good car because it cant drive through 2 feet of mud.

sladesurfer - you put a screenshot that I can't see it in full size and just that?
Tell everybody how did you do it? step by step.

I have
E6420 with stock cooler
ASUS P5B Premium Vista Edition,
Gainward 8600 GTG
and Sycron 2x512mb 1066mhz dual of ram

and all I could get was 2.400 ghz at 300 FSB x 6.

That's why because I'm new in this OC stuff and I don't know how to do it. So I came here to learn something.
Please explain all the steps you made.

Thank you.

Agree :)

Do you play Supreme Commander? I've had chips that ran ORTHOS for 4+ hours without crashing that would collapse in less than 20 minutes playing Supreme Commander.

Not bad. My 6420 is a a pretty good OCer too. I have one question though: why did you decide to go with a 1200W PSU with your config? Seems like OVERkill to me.

Then its not Truly stable.

Ide rather have it be stable for 4 hrs rather then 30 minutes. to me. Theres a problem

nice man. I don't even think I'll be able to OC my 6750 to that much, maybe cause I really wouldn't want to :p

Nice CPU! 3.7ghz is a huge clock!

300x6 = 1800.
Presuming it is 300mhz x 8, I would say that you should either try putting a tiny bit more voltage in or jumping up to about 450mhz FSB. You might have a weird FSB hole that comes in early

even orthos stability does not always equate gaming stability, but crash after 30 mins? That sounds pretty bad to me. I'd def prefer to have peace of mind that I won't bluescreen during a critical gaming moment than get the extra 150mhz out of my processor. What bugs me are not the people who obsess about orthos stability but people who post "overclocking" results that they would never run 24/7

If you start getting data corruption errors and have to run check disk regularly, you know where the problem is.

But, my hats off to you. I have mine at 2.93, but have not tried much. I just put on a Ninja cooler to quiet the thing down. I will see what I can get it too later on in the week.

Its not hard to get these e6420s to boot into windows past 3.5, the trick is getting them orthos stable at those speeds

Just got my e6420 up and running a few hours ago.. With the help of the Coolermaster Gemini II Cooler, I am easily at 3.2ghz. Of course, 3.2ghz is not much to brag about but over the next week and several heat cycles later, I will start playing with it.. I am pretty happy with my idle temps already at 29c (Core Temp 0.95).. That Gemini II is the BIGGEST damn CPU cooler I have ever seen.. OMG!

In addition to the e6420, I also bought an eVGA 8800GTS 640mb, OCZ 700w PSU, eVGA 650i Ultra motherboard and 2gigs (1gb x 2) of Gskill DDR2-800 memory. Since I am limited to by my ram, I think 3.2ghz is probably going to be the sweet spot on my particular setup. I think the ram will go DDR2-900, but thats pushin' it.. So, for now, 3.2ghz it is..

My first run on 3dmark06 (at 3.2ghz) with the STOCK settings on my video card, yielded me 9,630. Not bad. I'm pretty sure I can get close to 11,000 if my card is running 625/1000.

OK.. I'm pretty satisfied with this e6420 setup.. My temps are pretty low.. Idle at 29-30c.. Under Orthos, for about a few hours, I am at 52c.. I am still at 3.2ghz (400 fsb x 8). I am UNLINKED at 1.42 vcore. I clocked my 8800GTS 640mb to 600/1000 and went round 2 with 3dmark06.. I was able to score 10,660. With a few more tweaks, I am sure I could hit right around 11,000. Not bad for a BUDGET setup!

1. eVGA 650i Ultra (Brand New) - $70 (after rebate)
2. OCZ 700w PSU (Brand New) - $119
3. GSkill DDR2-800 2gigs (Brand New) - $89
4. E6420 Processor (Brand New) - $186
5. Coolermaster Gemini 2 (Brand New) - $15 (after rebate)
6. eVGA 8800GTS 640mb (used) - $290
7. Coolermaster Centurion 5 case (new) - $39
8. WD 160gb HDD (new) $59

I'm sure I could have found a few better prices if I shopped different places, but pretty much everything was bought at "The Egg".
