Can I expect to see a significant difference in everyday-use type of stuff? Worth the upgrade if Im a casual gamer?

3000+ is just single core, E6300 is dual core, that's one huge difference. If you're looking to compare Core 2's to AMD I'd compare the E6300 to an Opty 165 and even then the E6300 would probalby pull out ahead.

I just moved from an Opty 170 to an E6400 and in my benchmarks I've noticed the E6400 pulls ahead.

If all you do is surf the [H] forums and play Civilization 2, I doubt you'd notice a difference. People who only do such things get by just swell with a Pentium 3. It all depends on what you mean by "everyday" stuff and "casual" gaming.

If you ever play anything more demanding than UT2k4, you'll notice one hell of a difference, most likely.

I'd define "everyday use" as follows: the occasional new game (Oblivion, HL2, Crysis looks great, want to play that), ripping/converting DVD's into divx, web surfing, word processing, etc. When I'm just browing around, switching between apps, multitasking, transferring files - will I say "you know, things just feel faster"? I'm never owned a dual core cpu, so I'm not quite sure what I'm missing out on.

I just upgraded my rig from an xp3000+ to an e6400. The framerate boosts in Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 are pretty huge. I'd say framerates jumped around 50% on average, plus the minimum framerates are much better. Since this is with the cheapo asrock hybrid motherboard, the overclocks are nothing to brag about, but still this e6400 is rock solid at e6600 clock speeds. The total upgrade cost was only $350 (changed motherboard and cpu only), but I'm hoping to get 50 bucks selling the old motherboard and cpu, for a net cost of only 300 bones. That's a good bang for the buck.

Well, my upgrade from an X2 4400+ to a e6400 was noticeable, but not HUGE, and the X2 4400+ is worlds better than the XP3000. Unless you cripple it with 256mb ram, and a 16mb video card, and 4200 rpm hard drive, you will be impressed with the upgrade.

Edit: Cripple, not bripple, heh.
