e6300 conroe overclock

got a older rig here with a p5kpl-am epu board with very limited oc options, trying to get 2.8ghz out of it but it wont post over 348fsb.. the overclock setting for the ram only has 3 options, 667 800 and 1066, when i enter 333fsb and set the ram to 667 i get a frequency of 416mhz for the ram in cpu-z, and the cpu runs at 2333.. been a while since ive overclocked a ddr2 system so if anyone can shed some light, maybe i'm doing something wrong.
 
Hi there! Overclocking depends on a multitude of factors mobo, cpu , ram...
ddr2 = x2 so 832 mhz If your ram is rated at ddr2 800 u might have trouble ocing higher.
As you raise the fsb the ram will go up as u clearly see here.

Another problem that might occur is temps if your using the basic heatsink.
Max temp is 61C , near 75-80 it'll start to throttle back and above that it'll crash.

Also u should set the cpu pll voltage manualy as the vdroop requires u to have higher cpu voltage to be stable without it. (asus p5k behavior)
Also sometimes the wall is the mobo itself ... going to fsb 266 should allow u to go higher but like i said watch the cpu temp. i posted at 360fsb but my heatsink is stock and even with a smaller process my 6320 wouldnt load windows ...
 
What kind of ram?

I'd start with putting the ram at 667 strap and changing the timings to 6-6-6-18, then increasing its voltage to 1.95-2.0v. This shoudl eliminate the ram from the majority of your OCing session til the end. then start leaning on the FSB. When you start to run into stability issues, increase your CPU voltage. You may have to increase your northbridge voltage aswell. You are trying to clock on a budget board, so there may not be much adjustability in the voltage settings. You should be able to reach 400FSB though.
 
My basic p5k as way more options than that :eek:
No pll voltage either darn .... well u got it has high as u can probably .... 2.8ghz in't bad.
Min frequency games need usualy is 2.2ghz, to run well.
I'd reduce the fsb till your rams runnng at 800 , finding replacement ddr2 can be pricey now a days.

As long as you don't have a high end gpu , your cpu shouldn't be the bottleneck performance wise.
 
Okay, thats the same crap bios my wifes board has. or atleast it looks similar.

It also defaults the ram to 1.5v rather then the standard 1.8v. It was a bios designed with DDR3 in mind rather then DDR2. So up the ram voltage, up to 2.0v is typically safe for DDR2. I do believe you can also up the NB, CPU and PLL voltages alittle bit aswell. Then go ahead and start leaning on that FSB again. Once you lose stability, back it off 2 or 3 mhz and do some long term burn in, like 12hrs of prime95. If that passes, then you should have a stable 24/7 clock.
 
Yeah, its a bios limitation. In 2007 I OCd my E6300 to 3.42 ghz and the comp is still running today at my Bro in Laws house.

Although the board I was using there is the Gigabyte DS3, amazing overclocking mobo!
