That order is only recommended if you've already saved the SP1 and updates onto CD (or CD-R). My new system requires the chipset drivers be installed to even enable the Ethernet port that I have my DSL modem connected to. If that's the case, and you have broadband, then, there are two ways to get around that:
1. Switch your DSL or cable modem to a USB connection between modem and PC.
or
2. Revert to dial-up for access to the Windows Update site. (Not recommended if you have only a single phone line.)
