I'm getting ready to put my new gaming rig together, but wonder if I need to swing by Frys for one more part.

I've got a 28" monitor and a Radeon HD 5870 video card. The monitor has a HDMI connection in the back. The video card has DVI and HDMI connections. The monitor shipped with a DVI to HDMI adapter.

Should I go buy a cable so I can go HDMI-HDMI, or would DVI-HDMI be just as good?

well, from that thread it seems better to go HDMI

you CAN buy a HDMI cable from Frys if you like

but you could also order several HDMI cables for monoprice

don't believe that crap where they tell you you need gold plated HDMI connectors like Monster cables

that's all marketing bullshit designed to take advantage of the uninformed and guillible Joe Averages

a HDMI cable is a HDMI cable is a HDMI cable

go Monoprice for the win

well, from that thread it seems better to go HDMI

From the thread, I got that the only benifit of going hdmi-hdmi is for HTPCs and if I wanted audio through the cable. This isn't a HTPC and I don't plan on using the monitor for audio.

Am I missing something?

The only things that make HDMI 'better' are support for audio and a thinner cable and smaller connector. It'll be a bit cleaner to use HDMI, but DVI is just as good from a technical standpoint.

so in other words it doesn't matter?

Seems that way to me now. If I'm not using the audio portion, then it doesn't make sense for me to buy a different cable when the one I have will work just as well for what I'm using it for.

Just in case you were still wondering, no, you don't need to buy a different cable, lol.

No pics?!?
