DVI to VGA adapter problem

I recently sold my 9800 Pro to a friend. I'd used the DVI port and the VGA port on it, but never together, and I never used to DVI to VGA adapter. He tried using two VGA monitors, one through the DVI to VGA adapter. He set the desktop to expanded, but he's not able to get anything on the monitor hooked in through the adapter. It the power light shows it getting a signal instead of sitting in standby mode, but nothing is displayed on the screen. The same thing happens when he hooks up only one monitor through the DVI to VGA adapter. Is there some setting in the drivers we're missing to get this working?

Sounds to me like a bad connector. If only part of the signal gets there sometimes a monitor will register there being a signal but no video.

I suggest using a diffrent DVI -> VGA adapter and testing the monitors on a diffrent video card.

I don't think it's a driver issue. Not even going from NV to ATi will cause that problem. Anther problem is, did he plug in power to the video card??

I'm pretty sure there is an option called Alternate DVI Output, try that.

Does the other monitor work using the normal VGA output?

The video card works fine from the VGA port. He does not have a DVI monitor to try that port without the adapter. We tried two different adapters, the one that originally came with the card, and the one that came with my x850 Pro. Neither worked. I'll ask him if he can find that alternate DVI output setting you were talking about.
