so, i got a question. if i go out from my pc with a dvi to hdmi adapter, into an hdtv, will it display the picture? or is hdmi strictly for dvd players, etc?

it's a digital picture, so it should work. You might want to check on a home theater forum like AVS Forum. They live that stuff.

yeah, i was thinking of going there. but everytime i start to, i get a picture of 27 year old A/V club dropouts who only wanna help there own group...maybe ill check it out.

they are a twitchy "if you bothered to search the archive from last year you would have found the answer" kind of crowd, but there is a lot of info there.

I tried DVI to HDMI and DVI to component (no dongle) when i was using a 9800pro and neither cable worked for me... I had to grab the DVI to Component dongle to get the PC desktop on my TV.

I'm sure it works in some instances, but not all.

Since these cables can be spendy, you may want to borrow one, or check on the return policy of the place you grab your cables from before buying anything.

DVI -> hdmi worked fine for me (evga 6800gt & sony 30" wideswcreen crt hdtv)

the cable was like $15-$25 (dno't remember).

hey guys, thanks for the help...but the cheapest dvi-hdmi adapter cable i can find was $50..which is insanity, so i think im gonna hold off...

I just bought one for $15 but it was the wrong cable.

Mine has a dvi-i connector I think, it looks like an hdmi. I'll have to buy another cable :-(

They make them and cost between 80.00 and 150.00 depending on the manufacture. Don't expect to get good 1366 x 768 with 1:1 pixel display (most good 32" LCD's native resolution)......

DVI and HDMI use the exact same signalling spec, so all you need is a simple adaptor like one of these $29 ones:

Or you can get a DVI to HDMI cable if you want, they's got some of those as well, down towards the bottom of the page ($30):

I've had good luck with the cable I've bought from Ram before. Good quality without all the markup.

As long as your LCD supports PC input over HDMI (almost all of them do), it should be a snap to setup. You might need to create a custom resolution, but that shouldn't be to tough with something like PowerStrip. Just check out the HTPC forum at avsforum, you'll find everything you need:
