Hi Guys,
I've got a eVGA 6800gt and waiting on my Dell 2405. When I get that bad boy will I be able to run at 1920x1200 off the DVI connection? I remember reading that a single DVI (eVGA 6800GT has 1 DVI and 1 VGA) can only go to 1600x1200.
Am I up **** creek??

thanks

I think all 6800 can do the native resolution. I have a BFG 6800GT OC and it should be able to push those pixels no problem.

Took a look at eVGA's website

http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=256-P2-N376-AX

While it looks like nVidia's GPU can support those resolutions (and higher) it looks like eVGA went to the cheap side on components and will only do "1600x1200 digital". My guess is that means DVI.

Your choices are now to go with 1900x1200 on analog, or swap in a different card. Try it and see what you think - but with my ATI 9800, the difference between analog and DVI is very noticable.

Man that sux. :( A sad reminder that not all cards are built equal.

If you use VGA there will be a noticible quality diffeence and prety much null out on of the main reasons to use a LCD.

Doh!
I just went through hell getting this card.
Would I notice a significant difference running 1920 off the VGA analogue connection compared to the DVI?

i think youre wrong in that the dell will display the higher res without need of a dual link dvi card. your 6800gt will be fine.

I'd say, if you're running analog, it'll look just like a big CRT. It will look ok - but once you run DVI, and see the difference in clarity and color, you'll notice what you were missing out on.

If thats the case... eBay meet eVGA 6800GT!
I bought the card for the monitor, not vise versa!

..better yet, get an X800Pro, I picked mine up for $375.. and it rocks with my new 2405!!

With all due respect, this is a big, steaming pile of bullocks. Any DVI videocard will work at 1920x1200, ATI or Nvidia alike. THe only problem would be that the single-link DVI specs work properly up to 1600x1200 so at 1920x1200 u need to reduce timings or something of that sort, and that applies to either ATI or nVidia. So stop spreading this BS

<Fingers crossed>

I asked in the eVGA forums and someone is running the Dell 24"F FP off the DVI @ 1920x1200 and says it looks amazing. So I'm optimistic.

I've run my 2405 at native res on both a EVGA 6800 Ultra and a EVGA 6800 GT no problems through DVI.

I suspect that's a correct statement. I am using a PCI (yes that legacy slot) ATI 9200SE and to my surprise, it does 1920x1200 DVI and I didn't even load any ATI drivers, just the standard drivers that auto installs with XP and no tweaking of any sort needed.

I have a 6600GT running Dual 24's with no problem.

6800 should be fine

No need to get excited. I simply looked at their website and posted what I found. I thought it strange that a 6800GT won't do 1900x1200 (hence the word "guess" in the original statement, but nevertheless, I stand corrected.

Orpo, Hope it works out of your. Post back when you get the monitor (or borrow a friend's)! Dell always says 3 weeks, but it's usually less than one or two most of the time in my experience.

I have a 6800GT and am getting this monitor soon, if it turns out this video card has any problems running at this resolution with DVI I will never buy another Nvidia product again. It took a lot to be converted...

I just bought an XFX 6600GT with dual dvi output. Works fine with DVI at 1920x1200, unlike the Chaintech 5500 I tried on it two weeks ago.

You guys can relax, I've got both a 6800gt and a x800xt pe. They both do 1920x1200, as a matter of fact, the 6800GT has more resolutions avaliable below 1920x1200 than the x800. So for lower resolution widescreen gaming the 6800GT has more options.

Silly question:
You guys are running it off ONE DVI connection? Not two, right?!?
The eVGA card has one DVI output and 1 VGA output.

I run dual EVGA 6800 Ultras with a 2405FPW via DVI at 1920X1200, works just fine. I also tried the 2405 with my Radeon 9700 Pro and it also worked fine at 1920X1200 via DVI.

And only one cable is needed.

Yes I am, as I said chill man, it's gonna work fine.

What was the problem with the 5500?

My laptop with Intel extrem graphics also has troubles displaying 1920x1200 via VGA. Essentially, the problem is that I don't get the option of 1920x1200, only 1600x1200. I think it's a driver problem since if I fiddle around with video settings, I eventually get 1920x1200 option, and it works just fine. Dunno if this is similar problem to urs but u might wanna try enabling/disabling 2405 while using it in a dual-screen setup, see if that helps ;)

Could someone clarify this thread[please. If I have one ATi X800XT AGP with one DVI cable, will it be able to run a 1920x1200 lcd (such as the Dell 2405FPW)?

Yes!

I am using ATI 9600 (128M) running 1920x1200 through DVI no problem.

I also using ATI 9200 running 1920x1200 through VGA no problem.

I don't see any (noticeable) difference (image quality) between those two.

What was the problem with the 5500?

I use FreeBSD and XFree4.3

I should have tried "IgnoreDDC" or EDID, or whatever.

Apparently, there was a bug with some newer video cards, mostly Nvidia, where the monitor would communicate a weird spec to the video card, and rather than damage the display, the video card would default to a safe spec.

If you use the IGNORE DDC/EDID (read the manual) option in your XF86Config file, and you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, then you can try telling the video card to ignore the data communicated by the video card, and use a custom modeline/timing to get 1920x1200. At the time, I didn't know this, and I just used the VGA output (which is stil good).

If you are using a Windows based solution, you could try using Powerstrip to ignore EDID/DDC signals and try DVI. Be *VERY* careful; you could conceivably fry your monitor by using weird custom timings with removed safeguards! (Altho' the monitor should just refuse to display the signal)

Also, some people have said that ATI cards have better DVI chips for bandwidth at higher resolutions.

However, my XFX 6600GT Dual DVI card (only one is used with the 2405!) works *GREAT* with DVI *out of the box* with no modification line for ignoring DDC/EDID. So, the newer 6600 chipset doesn't need any mods to use DVI at that resolution.

I highly recommend the XFX6600GT if you are looking for an Nvidia based solution for $150-200.

(I have another post about problems with my MX4000 (VGA) card, with XV hardware acceleration mode with fullscreen movies (tearing in image); I think that card was just cheap, or had driver problems).

Hope this helps!

That's an extremely helpful post, mule_x. :) But I'm still confused... What do I have to do to with my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro to run 1900x1200 @ 60 Hz in Linux (Slackware/Gentoo specifically)? Since I'm going to get my 2405FP Dell LCD soon, I don't want to blow it up as soon as I receive it... ;)

Here is my post with my XF86Config file:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=880641

1. I don't think you'll have any problems with your 9800Pro. It should have decent TDMI transmitters for DVI. Try my modelines if putting 1920x1200 for resolution does not work. My modelines are communicated by the monitor, so they are safe. Do *not* use any "IgnoreEDID" or "IgnoreDDC" commands at this time. If it doesn't work, it will safely refuse to show a picture.

2. If you *do* have problems with 1920x1200, even with the modelines, then you can try the "IgnoreEDID" or DDC option (I think the command is different for ATI and NVidia servers). As long as you use my modelines (in above file), you *should* be safe, but I can't promise anything.
