I am in the market for a new DVD drive (not burner, just reader). I am having trouble locating any reviews/head to head comparisons for the drives.

My question is what is currently the best DVD-ROM drive for watching and ripping DVDs?

DVD-ROM drives are pretty much commodity items nowadays. Whatever you choose should Just Work without any problems. You don't get any head-to-head comparisons of floppy drives these days either... ;)

My Lite-On 16x drive worked fine for two years before I replaced it with a Plextor 8x burner, if that's any help...

Yeah, I'd happily buy a Lite-On drive again.
Also, my Plextor drive is locked at 2x for ripping, but as it turns out there's a cunning hack to get around it: If you press and hold the eject button for three seconds, the LED will flash three times and unlock the full speed extraction. It's a bit annoying, but almost all of my CDs and a lot of my DVDs are already archived, so I'm not too bothered about it...
